Junior Explorer kids MTB helmet: family rides and trails

The Junior Explorer is a Mavic kids MTB helmet made for first off-road adventures, in size S for a 51 to 56 cm head circumference.

The Junior Explorer weighs 320 g and goes with your child from learning to ride on the park path to a green-graded loop at a trail centre or along a forest track behind the family. For first singletrack descents, the Junior Explorer also sits in the Mavic range of mountain bike helmets, alongside adult models built for trail and enduro riding.

The Junior Explorer is checked against your child's measurement on four figures: the head range of size S, the weight, the safety standard and the fit system.

Head circumference and age: from toddler to teenager

Measured head circumference, not age, sets the size of a child bike helmet from toddler to teenager: size S of the Junior Explorer covers 51 to 56 cm.

Cycle helmet for kids aged 2 or 3: head size first

A cycle helmet for kids aged 2 or 3 usually has to fit a head under 51 cm: WHO growth tables put the median head circumference below 50 cm at those ages.

The Junior Explorer in size S needs a measurement of at least 51 cm, and Mavic makes no smaller kids' helmet: measure your child's head before buying a helmet for the first balance bike.

Junior cycle helmet for teenagers: beyond 56 cm

A junior cycle helmet for a teenager is found among adult helmets once head circumference passes 56 cm, the upper limit of the Junior Explorer in size S.

A teenager who commutes by bike through town finds a larger size among Mavic urban helmets, made for daily city riding and cycle lanes. A teenager who rides club runs and long group rides on the road chooses from the road bike helmets Mavic designs for fast riding on tarmac.

ErgoHold fit and chin strap for first rides and trails

A correctly fitted kids' helmet stays still on your child's head when they shake it: the ErgoHold retention system of the Junior Explorer tightens with micrometric adjustment to reach that point.

On a well-fitted kids bicycle helmet, the front edge sits two fingers above the eyebrows and the side straps meet just below each ear. The fastened chin strap leaves room for one or two fingers under the chin, without pressing on the throat.

Once locked, the Lockstrap straps of the Junior Explorer keep the length you set: before a family ride or a kids' mountain bike club session, your child buckles the chin strap and sets off without redoing the fit.

Girls' or boys' bike helmet: same size, same standard

A girls' bike helmet and a boys' bike helmet are the same product at Mavic: the Junior Explorer kids' helmet comes in size S with EN 1078 + A1 certification.

The Junior Explorer comes in three colours: your child picks one, then puts it on for the ride along the canal towpath. Choosing a helmet for a girl or a boy comes down to fit, not gender.

The EN 1078 + A1 standard, applied to the Junior Explorer under Regulation (EU) 2016/425, covers helmets for pedal cyclists and for users of skateboards and roller skates.

FAQ: kids bike helmet

A children's bike helmet is best chosen by trying it on at your child's current size: it should sit steady without squeezing and carry the EN 1078 marking for cycle helmets. A helmet bought too big to allow for growth sits poorly and protects less well in a crash, and a fitting remains the surest way to find the right size. The fit matters just as much: once tightened, with the chin strap fastened, the helmet should not move when your child shakes their head. The Mavic Junior Explorer comes in size S, covering 51 to 56 cm, with ErgoHold retention and lockable Lockstrap straps.

The size of a kids bike helmet comes from your child's head circumference, measured with a soft tape just above the eyebrows and around the back of the head. Note the measurement in centimetres and compare it with the size guide of the helmet, without going larger than today's measurement. Size S of the Junior Explorer runs from 51 to 56 cm: a measurement outside that range points to another helmet. Measure again at the start of each riding season, as a child's head grows with age, and check that the helmet still stays in place once tightened.

For an 8 year old, the size of a kids bike helmet comes from measured head circumference, not age: WHO growth tables by age stop at 5 years. Measure your child's head just above the eyebrows and around the back of the head, then compare the figure with size S of the Junior Explorer, designed for 51 to 56 cm. A measurement within that range means the Junior Explorer is worth trying on: once tightened, the helmet should stay still when your child shakes their head. A measurement above 56 cm points to an adult helmet in a larger size, with its range shown on the product page of each model.

A kids cycle helmet should be replaced after any impact the helmet has taken, even with no visible damage, and as soon as your child outgrows its size range. An impact can damage the inside of a helmet without leaving a mark on the surface, so a helmet that has been through a crash should be replaced. A helmet that no longer stays in place once tightened, or a head over 56 cm for the Junior Explorer in size S, also calls for a change. Mavic Crash Replacement gives 40% off a new Mavic helmet when a registered helmet is damaged in a fall, during the first 3 years.

A junior bike helmet from Mavic, such as the Junior Explorer, is covered for 2 years against defects in material or workmanship from the date of purchase from an authorised Mavic retailer. The Mavic warranty benefits the original purchaser of the Junior Explorer on presentation of proof of purchase. Registering the helmet with MAVIC CARE within 2 months of purchase extends the warranty to at least a third year, so the Junior Explorer can be covered for 3 years. Normal wear and tear, damage from a fall or impact, modification and improper maintenance are excluded. A warranty claim goes through your nearest authorised Mavic retailer, with the helmet and its invoice.
