Choosing road cycling shoes: 3 types, 3 needs
Categories
WHAT IS YOUR PROFILE?
Are you looking for the pair of road shoes that suits you best? Start by defining the profile of your rides.
Mavic explains the three distinct profiles to help you select the pair of shoes designed to meet your specific needs.
Endurance / long rides
You ride for hours on end, on rides lasting 3 to 6 hours, with a steady feel from start to finish.
Your effort is fairly steady, with occasional bursts (a hill, a sprint), but you prioritise pacing, rhythm and the pleasure of riding for long periods.
You should tick these boxes:
- You often go on long rides (weekends, cycle tours, mountains, endurance).
- You prefer a steady effort rather than an explosive one.
- You cycle at a steady pace, prioritising ease and duration.
- Your routes combine flat sections and hills, sometimes including several passes.
- Your priority is to avoid discomfort as the hours go by (overheating, numbness).

Performance / interval training
You do a series of tempo rides and cycle to improve: structured sessions, group rides, changes of pace, intervals, hill sprints. Your effort is sustained, often with tempo phases.
You should tick these boxes:
- Your rides are often tempo-based (tempo rides, intervals, club rides).
- You frequently accelerate (roundabouts, road signs, hills, short sprints).
- You prefer a firmer, more direct pedalling feel.
- Your cadence varies greatly depending on the effort (smoothness then power).
- Your routes alternate between fast riding and bumps, with changes in pace.

Racing / maximum efficiency
You ride with a “time trial” mindset: racing, competitions, personal goals, or very intense rides. You are looking for maximum efficiency, power transfer and precision:
You should tick these boxes:
- You undertake very intense and repeated efforts (racing, sprinting, attacking).
- You are looking for the best possible power transfer.
- You often ride fast, with periods of “full throttle”.
- You prioritise precision (foot locked in, immediate response).
- Your routes include fast flat sections, short hills and strong accelerations (or competitive use).

YOUR PROFILE, YOUR NEEDS:
Once you have determined your profile or profiles, Mavic will advise you on the most suitable road shoes.
Endurance: stable comfort, easy adjustment
Prioritise upper comfort, ventilation and a fastening system that is easy to adjust whilst riding. The aim is to keep the foot securely in place, minimise overheating and maintain a good feel as the temperature rises and the foot moves.
Recommended models for endurance:
- Aksium Strap: M-shaped strap closure designed to support the instep and forefoot, offering a simple and very comfortable fit.
- Cosmic BOA : BOA® L6 lacing system, nylon/fibreglass sole (medium stiffness rating), and memory foam insole.

Performance: firm support, more responsive sole
Look for consistent support (multi-zone lacing) and a stiffer sole to stabilise your footing. The shoe must ‘lock’ the foot in place: a stable heel and a secure instep. Here, we’re looking for a more precise feel: less unwanted movement, more control, and efficiency that becomes apparent as the pace picks up.
Recommended models for endurance:
- Cosmic Elite SL: offers a precise fit and a more efficient pedalling feel
TPU-reinforced upper and mesh panels, anatomical overlapping construction, BOA® L6 + front Velcro, Energy Carbon Comp sole and memory foam insole.
- Cosmic SLR: takes it further with a Matryx® upper and dual BOA®
Breathable Matryx® upper, dual BOA® L6 (two zones), 80/100 modulus carbon composite sole and front vents.
Maximum performance: direct power transfer, ventilation and precision
Opt for a stiffer carbon sole, precise fastening, and a stable upper that limits flex. In competition or on high-intensity rides, everything hinges on precision. Add to that well-designed ventilation: you maintain more consistent comfort when the intensity remains high.
