Tested on a complete WorldTour-level time trial bike, in the wind tunnel, the COMETE 85 required just 65.15 watts to overcome aerodynamic drag, compared with 67.10 watts for a benchmark competitor.
That translates into a 2.9 % reduction in aerodynamic drag, giving riders a measurable advantage when racing against the clock.

Built around Mavic’s Aero Wide technology, both wheels feature a 23 mm internal rim, witdth optimized for modern 28 mm tires. This combination strikes the perfect balance between aerodynamic performance and rolling efficiency, allowing riders to maintain higher speeds with less effort. Developed through extensive wind tunnel testing, Mavic Lab validation and feedback from professional athletes, every detail has been refinied to maximize performance real-world performance.

On the COMETE 85, 21 aero carbon spokes reduce aerodynamic drag while increasing lateral stiffness for immediate acceleration and highly efficient power transfer. On the COMETE Road Disc, the full-carbon construction combined with asymmetrical, wavy carbon flanges creates an exceptionally stiff platform that maximises efficiency, preserves momentuml and delivers an impressively smooth, stable ride at speed.

On the COMETE 85, the optimized 21- spoke carbon layout— 14 crossed spokes to maximize power transfer and 7 radial spokes to optimize weight and aerodynamics — archieves the ideal balance of stiffness, aerodynamic efficiency and lightweight performance. The Mavic COMETE 85 carbon wheel is the expression of our culture: testing, improving, validating, and then repeating until we achieve a result that will satisfy our most demanding riders.

Each component is tested on our in-house test machines, which can perform up to 57 different test, before a second series of tests validates the performance of the assembled wheel. This double-checking process guarantees reliability that far exceeds industry standards.

In the quest for marginal gains, we have completely redesigned the core of the wheel:

  • 40-tooth ratchets for instant response, 
  • An Optimized spring to minimize freewheeling friction,
  • Mavic Ceramic bearings to reduce friction,
  • A redesigned hub for aerodynamic performance and responsivenes,

It is now used by the professionals of the St Michel–Preference Home–Auber93 team, who use it in real competition conditions. Our laboratory tests using our measuring devices, for lateral endurance of 2,312 km and vertical endurance of 2,500 km with a load of 120 kg, represent a field equivalent of 700,000 km; enough to ride fast for a very long time. Beyond these figures, our wheels will maintain their performance throughout their entire lifetime.

The Mavic laboratory followed a comprehensive process: research, prototyping, testing, iterations, failures, improvements… until the optimal rim profile was achieved to meet the ambitions of the COMETE wheels project.

  • Specifc Mavic Adaptive Layup
    With a carbon weave specifically optimized to stiffness/weight/vibration absorption ratio, the MAVIC COMETE wheels rival the best wheels there is virtually no wind. As soon as the wind picks up (from ≈10 km/h, incidence of 10 to 20°), the shape of the rim improves aerodynamics and saves 5 to 10 W(2).
    The orientation of each fibre has been precisely engineered to meet the aerodynamic and mechanical demands of road racing.
  • Mavic Aero wide rim & Shooter Footprint rim shape 
    A section developed and validated through repeated testing.
    Objectives: minimize drag, stabilize the wheel in crosswinds, maximise control at high speeds, improve ground contact surface efficiency.
  • Aero carbon spokes
    Ultra-flat, lightweight and perfectly aligned, to transmit power with surgical precision. Spoke shape determined by wind tunnel testing to reduce drag from frontal and rotational airflow.
