What is the ideal rim size for trail riding: 29", 27.5" or something else?
The choice of rim size for trail bikes depends on the rider's preferences and the type of terrain. 29-inch rims offer better rollability, easier obstacle clearance and superior speed retention, ideal for long distances or less technical terrain. 27.5-inch rims, on the other hand, are generally more maneuverable and offer quicker responsiveness, which is desirable on winding or technical terrain. Some cyclists may also consider 27.5+ for greater traction and comfort, or even, more rarely, the 26", a relic of a bygone era. The rider's size and riding style also influence the decision.
Why is rim width so crucial for trail bikes?
The width of the rim has a direct influence on the shape and profile of the tire. A wider rim creates a greater surface area in contact with the ground, improving traction, which is ideal in muddy or sandy conditions. It also allows the tire to be ridden at lower pressures, increasing comfort and shock absorption. Is it better to opt for a tubeless rim for trail riding?
Tubeless mounting is particularly beneficial for trail bikes. Without an inner tube, it eliminates the risk of a pinch puncture. The lower pressures provide better shock absorption, which is essential on rough terrain. Traction is also improved, particularly on loose or slippery terrain. What's more, tubeless tires reduce rotational weight, making them easier to handle. For trail bikes, where grip and resilience are crucial, tubeless is clearly a wise choice.
