Mountain biking originated in the United States in the 1970s with a group of friends looking for a new thrill. Tired of tarmac roads, these young adventurers converted their bikes to hurtle down the Californian mountain trails. Mountain Bikes were born.
Despite its relatively recent history, mountain biking has spread rapidly around the world and has diversified over the years. Today, there are more than ten mountain bike disciplines: cross-country, trail, enduro, DH, all-mountain, freeride, e-MTB...
Among these, cross-country (XCO) can be considered the leading sport. Since 1996, it has been the only one on the Olympic Games program. To be ahead of their opponents on a technical and hilly track the rider requires the best possible performance from the wheels. Light and robust, cross-country wheels will allow them to gain precious seconds to overcome the intensity of the effort. One goal: victory.
Even more widespread, trail riding is a form of mountain biking based on endurance and exploration. Discovering unknown trails, climbing new summits, easily descending the steepest slopes... OUR MISSION & HISTORY: THE CROSSMAX
As early as 1985, Mavic started producing mountain bike rims, designing the first M4 and M5 models. It was 11 years later that the first global Mavic wheel system was born: the Crossmax. Rim, spokes, and hub are designed to work in harmony.
The Crossmax is entirely designed in France and manufactured in our European factories. First made for cross-country, a revolutionary wheel that is strong and light. It will prove itself at the Atlanta Olympic Games.
Today it’s still at the highest level and the latest performances of our athletes prove it, like the great 2021 season of Victor KORETZKY (Team KMC Orbea). 3rd in the XCO World Championships and winner of several World Cup rounds, he rides the Crossmax SL Ultimate.
On the back of these successes in the World Cup and the Olympic Games, we have adapted all our know-how and skills from the legendary CROSSMAX SL’s to trail riding. ID360 Ratchet System Freewheel
INSTANT DRIVE 360
Present on all our CROSSMAX wheels, the Instant Drive 360 is the brand new freewheel system designed and developed by Mavic.
Rigid and durable, its double ratchet mechanism guarantees faster engagement, offering the rider more direct acceleration and maximum power transfer at each relaunch, without losing power.
The ID360 is also designed to be compatible with all existing freewheel bodies: HG9, Micro Spline, SRAM XD...

The hub of MAVIC wheels
INFINITY HUB
Light and designed to maximise your performance, our brand new Infinity Hub is present on the entire CROSSMAX range. Introduced in 2020, the Infinity Hub optimizes the lateral stiffness of the wheel and guarantees a relationship with the spoke.
Combined with 24 identical straight spokes of the same length at the front and rear, our hub offers unparalleled ease of repair and maintenance.
The new spoking system has also been designed to increase the reliability and longevity of the wheel.

ADAPTIVE LAYUP
Specific to the CROSSMAX SL Ultimate, the new Adaptive Lay Up technology saves 70g per rim. The 25mm wide rim only weighs 340g.
This special lay-up technique allows us to produce carbon rims with less material between the spokes.
The spoke holes are reinforced with strategically placed carbon layers, which reduces weight without compromising the stiffness and strength of the wheel.

INTER SPOKE MILLING (ISM)
ISM is used on the SLS and XLS models. This manufacturing process developed by Mavic consists in reducing the thickness of the rim between the spoke holes to obtain a light and strong rim without compromising the strength and solidity of the wheel.
Laboratory tests have shown that an ISM rim is 10% to 20% lighter than a standard rim.
Less weight means less inertia, less effort and more efficiency. Better shock absorption ensures a smooth ride and improved battery life.

FORE TECHNOLOGY
Present on our aluminium wheels to increase rim strength, Mavic's Fore technology links the spokes directly to the lower rim bridge. This process marks the end of the drilling of the rim's upper bridge.
As the rim is naturally watertight, the tubeless tyre can be mounted without taping. Thanks to Fore concept, we can offer you the only true tubeless wheel.
This system allows you to easily change the spokes without dismounting the tyre and saves 30g on the overall weight of the wheel thanks to the lack of rim tape.

BLACK SHIELD
Specific to our aluminium wheels, the matte Black Shield treatment offers an incomparable finish to your Crossmax. This double treatment will protect the rim from impacts, combining style and durability.
The resistance to stone and scratch impacts is twice as high as a standard rim (twice the life span). Your rim will remain completely black, whatever your riding style or playground.
