“The Badger” Bernard Hinault
I believe it was fate that day. There are days when you don't know who can beat you.
It was the spring of 1981. Bernard Hinault was the reigning world champion. The Frenchman had no love for the Paris-Roubaix spring classic and its punishing cobblestone roads, but as he lined up to race “The Hell of the North” wearing the rainbow jersey, everyone knew “The Badger” was a favorite to win.
It rained that year, turning the cobblestones treacherous. Chaos and crashes ensued. Hinault went down three times. At one point he was forced to run through a field, carrying his bike, to avoid a fallen motorbike blocking the road. Near the end of the race, with 13km to go, a small dog ran in front of Hinault, causing him to crash again. Filled with rage, he chased back to the leaders, caught them before the velodrome finish, and sprinted to victory on his Mavic SSC rims.
“The Badger versus the Dog” is one of many legendary tales in Hinault’s colorful career. Best known for winning five Tours de France and all three grand tours, including the Giro d’Italia and the Vuelta a España, he is a legend who did it all. His style—pugnacious, aggressive and bossy—is unforgettable.
