Zabriskie takes win in Tour of California TT

David Zabriskie of the Garmin-Cervélo team proved again that he is one of the best time trialists in the world with a victory in the hilly Tour of California stage six time trial in Solvang, California. Riding his Cervelo P4 time trial bike, with a Mavic CC80 front wheel and Comete rear disc, Zabriskie beat pre-race favorite Levi Leipheimer by 14 seconds. He stopped the clock in 30 minutes and 36 seconds, setting a new record for the Solvang TT course.
 
“The time trial is my strong suit and I wanted to have a good ride,” said Zabriskie in a post-race press conference. “I felt a little fatigued in the beginning with that starting hill. But when I pre-rode the course I knew that the last stretch was really head-windy and I’d have to go hard there, and that’s what I did.”
 
The Solvang time trial course has been a decisive feature in the history of the Tour of California. It is about 15 miles in length and offers 500 feet of elevation gain, rising gradually for the first half before peaking on a hill and descending to the finish. This year, the Tour of California is marked by much harder road stages than in years past, but winning the Solvang time trial is viewed as a prestigious achievement.
