Gilbert wins in Canada and Belgium

Belgian strongman Philippe Gilbert of the Omega Pharma-Lotto team earned another feather in his cap, outsprinting Robert Gesink (Rabobank) to win the 200km GP Cycliste de Quebec. A few days later in Namur, Belgium, he won the GP Wallonie. These victories, coming at the end of a fantastic season, give Gilbert an insurmountable lead in the UCI WorldTour points classification.

In Quebec, the 2011 edition of this challenging 16-lap circuit race was marked by sunny skies, light wind, and warm temperatures. Each lap of the demanding 12.6km circuit delivered several tough climbs. As the relentless pace of the day thinned out the peloton, Gilbert’s team kept him protected and kept breakaways in check. Gilbert attacked on the Cote de la Potasse and then held off Gesink by just 3 seconds on the final 1.5 km run through town to take the win.

In Belgium, Gilbert won again on a finishing climb to the Namur Citadel with a powerful attack just over 1km from the finish.

Now, Gilbert leads the prestigious UCI WorldTour rankings, and his team Omega Pharma-Lotto becomes the number one ranked team in the world. Congratulations to Phil and all the riders on this powerful squad who have contributed great performances during this season.
