Vanendert wins stage 14, takes polka dots

Omega Pharma-Lotto continues to have an outstanding Tour de France, as Jelle Vanendert surprised an elite group with an attack to win the mountainous stage 14. Vanendert's win moved him into the spotlight, and into climber's jersey. He won the stage by 24 seconds over Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi).

The 169km stage included 6 rated climbs and 16,000 feet of climbing. The final climb to Plateau de Beille was rated hors categorie and was expected to be decisive. After a dramatic day of breakaways and attacking, Vanendert found himself in a select group with all the GC favorites. When the key riders neutralized each other's attacks, he blasted up the road and into the lead.

“The other GC rivals were watching each other, so that opened up a window for me. There were a lot of attacks early, I decided to wait until we were higher on the climb before making my move,” said Vanendert.
