Rodriguez 3rd, and Katusha wins team GC at Vuelta

After 3 demanding weeks in Spain, Joaquim Rodriguez of the Katusha team ended the Vuelta a Espana in 3rd place, while his Katusha team took the victory in the teams classification. In general, the Russian team had a very successful tour with 4 stage wins and Rodriguez contending for overall victory during much of the race.

Katusha’s Denis Menchov was victorious in the “queen stage” of the race, on the second to last day. He was part of a 19-man breakaway group that stayed away from the main pack all day, and he made a decisive attack on the final climb. The 11km  final ascent, the Bola del Mundo, was the launching pad for Menchov, who won by 17 seconds. In the group behind, his teammate and overall GC contender Rodriguez attacked and gained time on his rivals, but it wasn’t enough to re-take the race lead.

Afterward, Rodriguez said, “I’m very happy about my shape today, unfortunately I didn’t manage to take at least the second place of general classification. Anyways, my team’s and my performance in this ‘Vuelta’ were fantastic: four stage wins, we're about to win points and allround classification. And let’s not forget the fifth place of Moreno in overall standings and the prestigious victory of Menchov in today’s Bola del Mundo.
