Greipel gets one, Gilbert stays in green

The Omega Pharma-Lotto team had another reason to celebrate today, as their giant German sprinter André Greipel rode a perfect sprint to take the win on stage 10 in the Tour de France. This came after a powerful attack by teammate Philippe Gilbert, who has worn the green points leader jersey for the last 4 days now. In total, this Mavic-sponsored team is having a great Tour.

The 158km stage 10 included a series of 3rd and 4th category hills between the start in Aurillac and the finish in Carmaux. The early breakaway did not return to the field until the final 4th category climb with 15km remaining. This is where Omega Pharma-Lotto did the work to set up a powerful attack by Gilbert. However, he was brought back by the sprinter’s teams with just 3km remaining. But his effort allowed Greipel to hide in the slipstream of rival Mark Cavendish (HTC-Highroad). And with a massive sprint, Greipel came around Cavendish in the last 50m to take the biggest victory of his career.

Congratulations to Omega Pharma-Lotto, Greipel, and also to Gilbert, who remains in the green jersey for another day.
