The Stage 4 Team Time Trial in the 2012 Giro d’Italia delivered excitement from start to finish. In the end, the riders of Garmin-Barracuda won by just 5 seconds over the Katusha team, who also did a fantastic effort. Powerful riding by both of these teams puts their GC contenders in strong position going into the next weeks of this iconic race.
Garmin-Barracuda’s Ramunas Navardauskas moved into the pink leader’s jersey with this win. In fact, the top 4 places in the Giro overall are now held by Garmin-Barracuda riders. And on the Katusha team, GC leader Joaqium Rodriguez stole precious seconds over the other contenders.
Houffalize, Belgium hosted the second round of the UCI MTB World Cup on April 13-15, and the racing excitement suited this classic venue. Mavic riders won both the men’s and women’s cross country, plus the 4x gravity event held on the same weekend.
Julien Absalon (Orbea) rode a tactical race to take the victory in convincing fashion. After riding carefully in second place for most of the race, he attacked on the last lap to secure his first win of the season. Not far behind, Marco Aurelio Fontana of the Cannondale Factory Racing team finished in 3rd place, and his teammate Manuel Fumic came in 5th.
Among the women, Catharine Pendrel of the Luna Chix won the XC in commanding fashion. She was almost one minute ahead of the rider in second place.
And in the first UCI 4x of the season, Tomas Slavic (RDP) won with a strong performance in the final.
The first round of the 2012 UCI World Cup mountain bike series took place in South Africa, March 17-18, and Mavic-sponsored riders showed their intention to be among the best. Manuel Fumic of the Cannondale Factory Racing team pushed hard for 3rd place, with Olympic champ Julien Absalon (Orbea) hot behind him for 4th. In the women’s race, Catharine Pendrel of the Luna Chix team led for several laps before slipping back 2 places, finishing in 3rd. The downhill was exciting too, as Tracy Hannah (Hutchinson United Ride) won the women’s race and Mick Hannah was 3rd among the men. These results indicate an exciting season leading to the Olympics later in summer.
Congratulations to Juan Jose Fernandez of Vitoria, Spain. He is the lucky winner of our Paris-Roubaix contest, and he'll be riding in a yellow Mavic support car during the upcoming Paris-Roubaix. Thanks to all who participated. We hope to see you on the course!
Congratulations to the entire Liquigas-Cannondale team!
The 2012 UCI Track World Cup continued in Beijing during the weekend of January 12-15. This 3rd round proved to be successful for Mavic-sponsored riders, who brought home a total of 17 medals, including 6 gold medals.
In the men’s individual sprint, Charlie Concord of France and Lei Zhang of China finished first and second, taking the top steps on the podium for Mavic. In the women’s individual sprint, China’s Shuang Guo secured victory with Lin Junhong in third.

One of the largest Mountainbike Magazines in Europe, the German title BIKE, tested 12 different winter apparel combinations in a cold chamber in its latest issue (01/2012). The test criteria included the insulating properties of jacket and bib tight against cold, wind and moistness. Testers used infrared imaging to show heat loss. The Espoir Thermo Jacket received a “Sehr gut” and the Equipe Bib Tight rated a “Gut”. Mavic’s Riders Equipment combination ended up with a “bikeTIPP” for the best cost/performance ratio. The tester highlighted the excellent insulation, comfortable cuff and outstanding fit.

Showing great strength in the mountains, the Garmin-Cervélo team secured first place over all the teams in the first-ever USA Pro Cycling Challenge. This race traversed some of the highest mountain roads ever climbed in a bicycle race. With top climbers Christian Vande Velde and Tom Danielson, the team showed depth and experience to capture the top team prize.
In front of huge crowds in Denver, Christian Vande Velde finished just 11 seconds behind first overall, taking second place, and Tom Danielson was fourth overall. Teammate Danny Summerhill took a fine fourth place in the sprint on the final stage. The week of racing proved to be popular among US racing fans and it was a great success for Garmin-Cervélo.
Peter Sagan, the Slovak champion from Liquigas-Cannondale won a dramatic sixth stage of the Vuelta a España with three of his teammates also in the top five finishers. After winning both the Tours of Sardegna and Poland earlier in the season, at only 21 years old Sagan showed us once again his great potential.
On stage six, in the last 20km where the challenge of the day was located, Sagan and his team rode a perfect finish to secure the stage win, pushing the opposition out and finishing with four riders in the top five.
In a daring and dramatic solo attack, Thor Hushovd of the Garmin-Cervelo team won the 13th stage of the Tour de France. The reigning world champion is having his best Tour in years, having worn the yellow jersey for almost the entire first week. Now with this win, Hushovd achieves his 9th total Tour stage win. And, he's the first world champion since 2002 to win a stage while wearing the rainbow jersey.
Hushovd joined a break of 10 riders and started the Aubisque climb with a 5 minute gap on the peloton. He surged from the break to gain extra time on the climb, but was caught and passed by Jeremy Roy (Francaise des Jeux)and David Moncoutie (cofidis). Roy crested the summit with a 2 minute lead, but Hushovd caught Moncoutie on the descent and the two chased for the final 13km to Lourdes. Hushovd dropped Moncoutie who was unable to pull, then caught and passed Roy with just 2km remaining. Winning alone with arms in the air, it was a masterful show of force from the 33 year old Norwegian.
"It's the most beautiful stage I've won on the Tour de France, for sure," said Hushovd.
The Alpe d’Huez MegaAvalanche enduro is possibly the most famous race of its kind in the world. So, it was almost natural for Anne Caroline Chausson, one of the most famous women in downhill mountain biking, to find success in this event. Last weekend, she won her third Méga in a row on this famous track, and adding to the palmarés of Mavic riders, Jérôme Clementz finished second in the men’s event.

Awards like this acknowledge the hard work of Mavic engineers to create not just outstanding wheels, but complete integrated systems that elevate the performance to a sum that’s greater than the individual parts.
With an emphatic victory in Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Belgian powerhouse Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) completed a rare sweep of the hilly Ardennes classics. Gilbert is only the second rider in history to achieve this feat. His success completes a string of April wins by Mavic athletes that began with Johan Van Summeren’s (Garmin-Cervélo) triumph in Paris-Roubaix.
“It is the most beautiful day of my sporting life,” Gilbert said after Liege-Bastogne-Liege, also known as La Doyenne, the oldest of the spring classics. “I shall appreciate every moment of this day.”
Gilbert’s historic run began one week earlier in the Netherlands. Starting in Maastricht, the Amstel Gold race is famous for short, sharp climbs and twisting, technical roads. Gilbert and his team rode a smart race, and he delivered an overpowering attack on the Cauberg climb to take victory at the top.
Just days later, Gilbert charged up the super-steep ramps of the Mur de Huy to win La Fleche Wallonne. The 28-year old Belgian hails from this region of the Ardennes and enjoyed the support of many fans. He surged from the front of the peloton with 400m to go and never looked back.
Victory in Liege-Bastogne-Liege completed Gilbert’s remarkable streak. After his Omega Pharma-Lotto team monitored the peloton for the first half of the race, he escaped with 20km remaining, tailed only by the brothers Frank and Andy Schleck. Yet Gilbert easily overpowered them in the finale.
For each of these impressive wins, Philippe Gilbert chose Mavic Cosmic Carbone Ultimate wheels. “For me, they are the best combination of light weight, stiffness, and aerodynamics,” he said. The CCU model is often the most popular with Mavic-sponsored road racers. It particularly suits the all-around demands of the Ardennes classics.
Earlier in April, winning Paris-Roubaix required a completely different formula. Johan Van Summeren’s victory with the Garmin-Cervelo team validated their smart tactics and team strength. It also affirmed the effort of Mavic engineers to create an entirely new wheel for the special demands of this rugged course. The M40 prototype developed in close collaboration between Mavic and the pro riders featured a wide tire bed, medium profile carbon rim, and extreme strength to combat the cobblestones.
From start to finish, April 2011 is truly one to remember for Mavic athletes.
After a risky decision and ambitious team tactics, Johan Van Summeren of the Mavic-sponsored Garmin-Cervélo team won the 104th edition of Paris-Roubaix, finishing alone at the front of the race on the famous Roubaix Velodrome. Van Summeren’s triumph is rightly regarded as the biggest victory in the history of the Garmin-Cervelo organization, and it marks a hard-earned return on years of investment in team work, technology, and sport science.
“This is a great win for me and it’s thanks to my team that I was able to win,” Van Summeren said after hoisting the trademark cobblestone trophy over his head. “Thor (Hushovd) was the leader today for our team. He’s the world champion and I was working for him. When the tactics played out, I was in position to make an attack. I could tell early on that I had good legs.”
Also known as “the Hell of the North” and “Queen of the Classics,” Paris-Roubaix is the hardest event in the annual series of one-day races known as the cobbled spring classics. Measuring a full 258km in length, the course includes over 25 sectors of brutally rough cobblestone tracks. These cobbled sections define the race and demand the most ruggedly durable riders and equipment. Victory in Roubaix requires strength, skill, smart decisions, perfect teamwork, careful preparation, and a dose of good luck.
The Garmin-Cervelo team and their 30-year old workhorse Van Summeren enjoyed all of these advantages on the unusually hot, sunny Sunday of April 10th, 2011. Known more as a domestique or team worker than as a team leader, Van Summeren benefitted from the strength of his team’s tactics. He was encouraged to join an early breakaway and thus lift pressure from Garmin-Cervelo’s race favorite, world champion Thor Hushovd. Hushovd was free to follow the moves of the other race favorites and neutralized their effort.
Out in front, Van Summeren proved to be the strongest of the leading group, dropping the remaining riders in the critical Carrefour de l’Arbre cobblestone sector with 17km remaining in the race. He powered alone on the dusty course to the finish with a final gap of 19 seconds over the surging pre-race favorite Fabian Cancellara.
“This, by far, is our biggest win as a team,” said Garmin-Cervelo sport director Jonathan Vaughters. “And we’re especially pleased the way we won it. People have to remember that cycling is a team sport and we rode our team tactics today to perfection.”
Under Vaughters’s leadership since it was created nearly 10 years ago, the team is known for technical innovation and a progressive approach to the usually traditional sport of pro cycling. Garmin-Cervelo has a commitment to clean, ethical sport, plus careful development of both riders and technology.
Victory at Paris-Roubaix also rewards Mavic’s big R&D efforts with sponsored teams. Mavic made a special effort for the Spring Classic races, in partnership with team riders and staff. Team riders had requested rugged carbon wheels, especially suited for the wide tires necessary to survive the cobbles of Paris-Roubaix. Mavic’s development team delivered on time, discovering in the end that their medium-profile rim, 40mm deep and with 24 spokes, was rigid for powerful sprinting, durable enough to withstand the harsh pave sectors, and yet compliant enough to offer a comfortable ride.
Final ride testing of the prototype wheels finished just weeks before the race. Both Hushovd and Van Summeren participated to provide critical validation, and the team’s success in Roubaix marked the ultimate proof for the new prototype.
The film below, made one month before the race, shows this process of close interaction between pro athletes and Mavic engineers.

Samuel Dumoulin (Cofidis) scores a series of wins: the first stage of Tour du Haut Var in February, and now two times in March in Spain during the Volta a Cataluña with two stages (5 and 7).
Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) won the 5th stage of Tirreno-Adriatico by dominating the leading group with his sprint speed.
Earlier in the week, Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Cervélo) won the 2nd stage with great confidence.
After a year off from racing due to injury, Fabian Barel rejoins the Mondraker Factory Team. Early March in Barcelona (Spain), he started the new season, and his return to the front of the international scene, by winning the San Andreu de la Barça round of the Spanish Open in front of 2000 people.
Yannick declared: “I spent my last weekend (March 5-6) in Peyrgude in the French Pyrenees for the first stop of the Fise MTB tour. (…) The last run was my best one: a barspin on the first step down into a flip up the step up, truckdriver down the drop to finish on a backflip tailwhip on the last one! I was so stoked about my truckdriver on the drop ‘cause I’ve never pulled that before! So this last run got me on the highest step of the podium. Super stoked about that result!"
Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) won the Strade Bianche (Eroica), one of the most epic road races of Italy. Portions of the race traverse white gravel roads, a feature that brings a unique challenge to this out of time event. Gilbert’s victory follows a previous success in February during the Tour of Algarve (PT).
Liquigas-Cannondale team rider Ivan Basso won the Grand Prix of Lugano in Switzerland. The Italian racer beat the two other contenders after a strong sprint.
Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) won 3 stages during the Giro di Sardegna in February. Peter succeeded on stage 1, 3 and 4 and took the final victory and the overall.
Fabien Barel and Jérôme Clementz participated in the Urge Cabo Verde race last week, a pure freeride enduro race on open spaces such as the local volcano. The objective was to race and also to bring help to the children of Cabo Verde (Cape Verde). Fabien and Jérôme finished 3rd and 4th respectively. Jérôme did 3 runs out of 4 with a partial rupture of the ligaments in one finger.

Garmin-Cervelo continued its winning ways with Heinrich Haussler winning stage 3 of the Tour of Qatar which moves him into the overall lead and second overall after racing 6 days. This is Haussler’s second stage victory in-a-row and really shows some impressive early-season form using Wheel-Tyre System.
Garmin-Cervelo continues its winning ways and brings its good early season form from the Tour Down under to the 2011 Mallorca Challenge. Tyler Farrar won back-to-back stages yesterday and today to claim his first 2 victories of the season.
Australian rider Jack Bobridge, Garmin-Cervelo's 21-year old rising star, surprised himself and the cycling world by setting a new world record in the 4km pursuit. He rode a pair of Comete Disc wheels on Sydney's Dunc Grey Velodrome during the Australian elite track championships, stopping the clock at 4:10.534. Bobridge's time is over 0.5 seconds faster than Chris Boardman's previous world record set in 1996, a record once thought unbreakable. 'To come around and see that on the board, I was honestly quite shocked,' said Bobridge. Clearly on a roll this year, Bobridge was also recently crowned Australia's elite road race champion.
